Californian considers porn tax

LOS ANGELES: California state lawmakers are considering an unusual idea to solve the state’s huge budget shortfall: pornography tax.

The idea to impose a 25 per cent tax on the production and sales of pornographic videos the vast majority of which are made in southern California was proposed by a state assemblyman.

It is unknown, however, how seriously lawmakers will take the idea or how the porn business will deal with the new tax.

It is likely, though, that porn-makers would simply pass the cost along to consumers by making pornographic materials more expensive or shift their business to other states.

However, many economists believe that pornography is an industry with inelastic demand meaning market conditions typically don’t affect consumers’ desire for the product.

this is one of the stupidest ideas i've heard yet...

to justify this - the sponsor made some ridiculous allegation that this money will be used to provide services for the people that left the business in a shattered ruin.

    preposterous!!!

The porn industry is not inelastic. Currently they are taking a bit hit from the current economy fall. Not as much as some industries but, significant still. If a tax is placed on pornographic industries and materials then we might start seeing them fold as well.

Personally i think they should legalize prostitution and make them pay taxes (this also means that in home businesses could use the space as a write off on their taxes). That and just tax drugs instead of doing drug raids. it would save money and increase income in the states budget.

    but that's just my opinion.
